Stained glass is a hobby that comes with some risk. We use VERY hot soldering irons, leaded solder, and chemicals during the process. Glass is ground but still has the potential to be sharp. We do out best to mitigate risk and have safety protocols on place, but there is still potential to get cut, burned, or inhale fumes. For this reason, children, pregnant women, and those with lung issues or who are extra sensitive to chemicals or smells.

It’s true, lead is used in the solder of stained glass making. We use a 60/40 solder on most pieces. This lead is generally considered safe. Lead is harmful in ingested or particles (like what would come from lead paint) are inhaled. We use gloves when working with stained glass and always encourage hand washing. Any time you handle a stained glass piece you should wash your hands.

We use an acid called flux to help adhear the solder to the copper foil (or came). Flux can make fumes when the hold solder is applied. In general, these fumes should not cause a problem. We use fume extractors and small fans to help move air around and reduce any risk, however, if you are extra sensitive to chemicals or smells, we recommend you bring your own respirator mask to your class. They can be purchased for around $40.
